Sharon from New York City writes "My favorite route is the East River corridor, because it's so varied and unmanicured. I start by navigating the local streets and maneuvering around the United Nations in order to reach the open expanse of the river, which is glowing in golden afternoon light. But this bucolic section lasts only a few blocks, soon to be replaced by the crowds at the Waterways Ferry dock, the screams of the revving engines at the heliport, and the line of taxis at the Water Club. By the time I round a housing complex and coast onto the bike path that leads past the party yachts I feel like the silver ball in a pinball game, and the trip is only half over. Stuyvesant Cove, with it's picnic furniture and landscaping is a good place to stop for a gulp of water and a gander at the view. Then it's past the clumps of fishermen on the brick walkway, past the power plant with its eerie minarets, a squeeze through the narrow bikeway skirting the roaring FDR highway, and into East River Park, with it's playgrounds, ballparks, and gutted asphalt paths. I've lived in New York City nearly all of my life, but you don't truly know your city until you've scooted it." Thanks Sharon, for having selected your ride, we'll send you a Xootr carry bag. We'll do the same next newsletter, so keep sending them in.
I'M DREAMING OF A GREEN PLANET
Xootr was recently named a top eco-friendly gift by The Green Guide. We at Xootr care deeply about the environment. In fact, one of our founders, Karl Ulrich, is also a founder of Terrapass (
www.terrapass.com the leading retailer of environmental offsets for automobiles. When you can't use your Xootr scooter or bike for personal transport and need to burn some fossil fuel in a car, you can reduce your environmental impact by buying a carbon-dioxide "offset." For a few cents per mile, Terrapass can mitigate the greenhouse effect of your driving. This works by pooling together the funds of thousands of Terrapass members and then using those funds to tip the economic balance in favor of renewable energy and energy efficiency, say by subsidizing the cost of wind power. These actions result in reductions in greenhouse gas emissions that exactly equal the emissions of your car. Pretty cool, eh?
ASK DR. BEETZWAKEN: YIKES, IS HUMAN POWER REALLY BAD FOR THE ENVIRONMENT? In a previous newsletter, I wrote that the use of human power for personal transportation could in fact be bad for the environment. Huh? The Swiftian argument goes like this. If you ride your scooter or bike instead of driving, you save gasoline. However, you also live longer because of the health benefits of the physical activity, and this effect about equals the effect of the gasoline savings. This somewhat tongue-in-cheek argument was examined in full academic detail by Karl Ulrich in a working paper on the subject (
http://opim.wharton.upenn.edu/~ulrich/publications.html). The paper then blew up into a modest internet phenomenon, covered by the New York Times, Slate, and CNBC, and complete with hate mail and ad hominem attacks. The analysis is probably right, but many people missed the main point. As a society, we actually value human health and longevity more than we value environmental benefits. It is an inescapable fact that most environmental problems are proportional to population and that population is driven by health and longevity. So, let's focus on human powered transportation as first and foremost a way to life a long, healthy, and more sane life, while remembering that as a society we need to confront the tension between a quest for longevity and the environmental consequences of an ever increasing global family.
WARMEST WISHES
From all of us at Xootr, we wish you happy holidays and a safe and prosperous New Year.
Xooter Scooters are the next generation of Adult Scooters
Xooter Scooters are perfect buy for when adults need to push the limits of urban transport or to speed up a long walk to the bus or train station for your daily commute. Adult Push scooters with larger wheels and bearings do more of the work for you, plus they look way cool and there is no hassle because it's a folding scooter!
Xootr Spelling Lesson
Xootr often mispelled xooter zooter zootr xoots. Plurals are xootrs xooters zooters zootrs. And now with all that you can't forget to know it's just simply: "Xootr" :)
Online Xootr Reviews:
There is simply no comparison between conventional kids kick or push scooters and this machine. I am a 200+ lb 34 year-old man, and I have ridden all the leading adult scooters, and there's nothing like Xootr, in function OR in form.
When you buy Xootr adult scooters the only thing to ponder is whether to buy the Xootr Cruz [wooden board] or the Xootr Street [aluminum board] ...or even the new extra cool Xootr MG model! The only differences between the Cruz and Street models are the price and the material used for the board and the choice of materials really just a matter of your aesthetic preferences. You won't break the Cruz's board unless it gets run over by a mack truck, the wood is extremely solid. The Cruz looks funkier, more hipish, kind of friendlier than the Street. The Street's aluminum board is a mean machine ultra-sleek, gorgeous, sexy, porsche-like style.
