I got a set Swiss Ceramic and I was expecting them to blow away the Swiss Super 6 that I already had.I aloud a break in period for a week.I found the Swiss super6 a much faster bearing overall. So I went back to Swiss super6.

I have skated on a set of Bones Swiss ceramic bearings for almost three years. I also own sets of Bones Reds, Swiss Labyrinth, and VXB full ceramic bearings. All of which have their advantages and disadvantages. The Bones Swiss ceramics are the best 8mm bearing for the money. Depending on where you skate, the minimal maintenance label can be misleading. Even with pretty good Bones seals, artificial hair (sorry ladies) can get into the bearings. The hair filaments wrap around the retainer cages and interfere with the ball rotation. I skate normally twice a week. I inspect my bearings (remove and clean) about every two to three months. My first clue that there is some contaminant in the bearings is from a simple spin test. One or two bearings have shorter spin times than the others. Removing the cages (always push them out and not pry them out) is the best way to remove the artificial hair. [Check Bones web site for retainer removal instructions] Clean retainers, clean ceramic ball, and clean races (plus some Bones speed cream); the bearings are as good as new. Ultrasonic cleaners and shaker swishing will not remove the artificial hair tangled up in the retainers. I'm sure this is true for all bearings. The full ceramic bearings from VXB are more tolerant, but a lot more expensive. There is no such thing as a maintenance free roller skate bearing.

- 4 stars - prolonged skating invites resistance
Review Date 2012-02-18 - Helpfulvotes 0 - Unhelpfulvotes 0 - Verfied Buyer? Yes -
Starting out with bearings in the ibec 5 range I noticed a distinct lack of performance. Graduating to Swiss Bones Reds and then to Swiss Bones Ceramics I noticed distinct improvement with each upgrade.Speed skating now for ten years and on my second set of Ceramics the one constant that I noticed with the ceramics is that after a good workout of a half hour of laps at a good clip was that resistance would start to manifest and slow you down. Spin testing to expose any one or more culprits in the group of ten would indicate, provided hair wasn't the issue, rattling cages in some of the bearings, besides any microscopic indicators that could not be determined outside a lab. Overall for my use now, being almost 65, and skating for fun and physical activity a half hour resistance indicator is advise to, take a brake.
